A Catholic school in Charlotte fired Lonnie Billard, a gay substitute teacher, after he shared on social media his plan of marrying his longtime partner. Billard has been part of the school system for more than a decade and was awarded teacher of the year in 2012.

“After all this time, I have a sense of relief and a sense of vindication. I wish I could have remained teaching all this time."

The school claims that he advocated against the Catholic Church beliefs, but Federal Judge Max Cogburn ruled that it violated Billard’s rights and protections against sex discrimination under the civil rights act. A trial will soon be held to determine Billard’s future as a teacher.
